Visual impairment support

The following support is available for visually impaired children and young people (CYP):

  • advice and support at the point of transition into education and between education settings
  • advice and support on the adaptation of tactile resource
  • advice and support to parents, carers and families of pre-school children via regular home to pre-school setting visits including stimulation of any possible residual vision and help with development, play skills and meeting appropriate milestones
  • advice on EHC needs assessments, EHC plans and reviews, and One Planning
  • advice on public examinations including access needs
  • advice to teachers and education staff on inclusion including specific differentiation, adaption of resources into large print or braille and pupil- specific advice on curriculum subjects
  • assessment and specialist teaching of ICT skills
  • assessment of mobility and habilitation needs including specialist teaching as required by specific pupil needs
  • environmental access audits
  • opportunities for children and young people to meet and socialise
  • signposting to other organisations, services and activities
  • specialist teaching, assessment, support, monitoring and reporting on the development of language, literacy, learning, interaction and social and emotional skills
  • specialist equipment provision, training and support including video magnifiers or Braille resource-making equipment
  • specialist teaching of the Unified English Braille code and teaching, coaching for support staff to learn braille
