An introduction for those new to supporting CYPVI in their classrooms.

Topics covered include the following:

  • eye conditions and their implications
  • resource preparation
  • the social and emotional implications of having a VI
  • the role of the LSA

Who is this course for

SENCos, class teachers and learning support assistants who are new to teaching and supporting CYPVI.

Venue

A quadrant-based setting.

Booking a place

This training is by invitation only and offered yearly to all mainstream schools who receive a new pupil with vision impairment. ​

Bespoke courses on vision impairment

These are sessions for schools, pre-school settings and colleges designed to support them to meet the inclusion needs of a specific pupil with vision impairment.

Topics covered will include the following:

  • vision impairment awareness
  • the specific eye condition and its implications
  • curriculum access bespoke to the particular pupil

Length

Usually delivered as a twilight session often in a workshop format.

Who is this course for

SENCOs, class teachers and learning support assistants.

Venue

In the school, pre-school setting or college.

Cost

Free.

Topic-based workshops on vision impairment

Topic-based workshops for pre-school, school or college staff working with high needs children with vision impairment.

Topics we’re proposing to offer include the following:

  • making resources in large print
  • supporting pupils who use VI specialist ICT equipment
  • exam access and arrangements
  • habilitation and mobility
  • making tactile diagrams

Length

Half-day or twilight.

Including a student with vision impairment​

This 30-minute training video will increase your knowledge of visual impairment. 

You will also learn about what you can do to include students with visual impairment in class.

At the end there’s a post-course task for you to do. Once we receive it, we’ll send you a certificate of completion.

To get a certificate all you need to do is:

  • watch the video to the end
  • think about 1 task you’ll do or try as a result of watching the video
  • email the task to your own Essex specialist teacher for vision impairment who supports your school

Adapting resources for large print users in secondary schools

This short training video is an introduction to the tools you can use for students who need large print resources.

At the end there’s a post-course task for you to do. Once we receive it, we’ll send you a certificate of completion.
