Virtual school guidance
16 to 18 year olds
Our duty to promote the education of CiC extends to young people aged 16 or 17 years preparing to leave care.
Under the Children Act 1989 these are 'eligible children'.
All young people post-16 should have a PEP which is part of the preparation and review of their pathway plan.
Their PEP should build on their educational progress and include the following:
- their progress in education or training
- how they can access training, further education, higher education or employment services
Care leavers receive support to find establishments that:
- understand their needs
- work to meet the requirements of looked-after children and care leavers
For more information about this support download our Supporting Young People in Care in Schools and Colleges post 16 document (Word, 248KB).
Designated teachers
For guidance for maintained schools carrying out duties for CiC and CLAC use DfE’s Designated teacher for looked-after and previously looked-after children statutory guidance.
