Climate action in schools

An overview of schools' responsibilities for climate action, how to develop a Climate Action Plan and the support available from Essex County Council.

From September 2025, the Department for Education expects all schools to have:

  • an appointed Sustainability Lead
  • developed a climate action plan

Climate action is a key priority for ECC and we aim to support schools by providing guidance, resources and programmes of support.

Develop a climate action plan

A climate action plan supports adoption of a whole school approach across key areas, including

  • energy
  • transport
  • waste
  • water
  • nature, biodiversity and green places
  • food
  • procurement

Linking action to the curriculum and student engagement are considerations throughout.

Benefits of climate action

Taking climate action has immediate and long-term benefits for schools, such as:

  • lower energy costs and greater efficiency
  • reduced risks from flooding and overheating
  • improved well-being through greener, healthier school environments
  • leadership, skills and career-building opportunities for students

Schools that act now will be better prepared for the challenges of climate change and will contribute to a more sustainable future for Essex communities.

Information and practical support from ECC and local partners for school leaders will be shared on these pages including wider policy and regulatory change.
