Pupil premium grant

The pupil premium grant is funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in state-funded schools in England.

The grant is available for children who are:

  • previously looked after
  • subject to adoption
  • subject to special guardianship orders (SGOs)
  • subject to child arrangement orders (CAOs)

To claim it, parents and carers must self-declare that they have a previously looked after child.

Headteachers should request sight of the legal paperwork, for example, a court order or certificate. Parents are not obliged to declare this information.

This must be recorded on the school's management information system before the October (Autumn) census for the school census to be accurate.

The funding goes straight to the school along with the free school meals (FSM) pupil premium.
