Hearing impairment (HI)

Specialist teaching, support and advice for early years, school and post-16 settings.

Referral criteria

Children and young people are accepted onto the caseload of a teacher of the deaf if they have one of the following:

  • permanent hearing impairment diagnosis
  • temporary hearing impairment diagnosis alongside an additional SEND diagnosis

We use the nationally agreed system (NatSIP eligibility criteria) to guide decision-making on the level of support allocated for individual children and young people.
