Definition of bullying

There is no legal definition of bullying. However, it’s usually defined as behaviour that is:

  • intended to hurt someone physically or emotionally
  • often aimed at certain groups, for example, because of someone’s race, religion, gender or sexual orientation
  • repeated

It takes many forms and can include the following:

  • cyberbullying for example, via mobile phone or online including email, social media and instant messaging
  • making threats
  • name calling
  • physical assault
  • teasing
