What inclusion means in practice

What schools should consider to ensure they have an inclusive culture

In Essex, we believe that every child and young person deserves access to high-quality inclusive education. Our education settings value diversity, promote equity and support individual needs effectively.

Inclusion is not just a principle. It is a commitment to ensuring that all learners feel welcomed, valued and empowered to thrive.

Inclusion in Essex means:

  • Children and young people have multiple, mutually respectful and strong relationships.
  • There is a focus on wellbeing at all levels.
  • School environments where diversity is celebrated, differences are respected and participation is encouraged.
  • Reasonable adjustments and ordinarily available provision are in place.
  • A workforce that is enabled with the tools, training and frameworks to deliver inclusive teaching.
  • Support that can be stepped up and down as appropriate to meet the needs of individuals and cohorts.
  • Collaboration across education, health and care to meet needs in a timely way.
  • Children and young people are well supported and encouraged to access their next steps and destinations positively.
