Recruitment and Retention

Page last updated: 07/12/2023

Essex formed a Steering Group to look at Recruitment and Retention (R&R) made up of representatives from LA officers, the Essex professional associations, ITT and HT. this was chaired by Nicola Woolf, Assistant Director for West.

The group looked at ways to support schools as they faced growing challenges in R&R.

The group's aim was to pursue strategies which will be of help to schools in both recruiting and retaining key staff.

Through the use of Essex social media and websites, we have raised the profile of Essex as an excellent place to live and work. Videos of Essex teachers who have moved into the county have been created and these are available on the Essex Schools Jobs website.

There was a focus on practical strategies for teacher retention. Headteachers provided some Top Tips for retaining your Best Teachers to support other headteachers. It may be useful to consult your HR provider before implementing some of the strategies. This is cited to ensure compliance.

If schools or groups have innovative projects which they are developing, please email.

Recent Update

A survey was sent out by the R&R group in 2019 to cover the following areas:

  • Teacher Turnover and Retention

  • NQTs

  • Flexible / Part-time Working and Staff Wellbeing

  • Workload

These are the Survey Findings.

To follow up the survey, the group commissioned a national research organisation (ISOS Partnership). This was to undertake interviews with school leaders, and to summarise the evidence gathered into an accessible pack. Evidence was gathered in respect to retention practices in Essex schools under four themes:

  • Early Career Support

  • Flexible Working

  • WorkloadTeacher

  • Wellbeing

You can use the pack in many ways for discussion to consider whether you can use any of these strategies in your schools:

  • in Partnerships / MATs

  • item at a Governing Body / Committee meeting

  • SMT meetings

The group are very grateful for the time that school leaders gave to talk to the researcher. If you feel your school has any strategies to share please email

There is also information on recruitment and retention on the website.
