The DfE have
introduced transitional protection of FSM as part of the Universal Credit
rollout. This only applies in England and is effective immediately, for
children that are currently eligible or become eligible for FSM, and means that
they remain eligible until the end of the Universal Credit rollout on Thursday
31 March 2022. The protected Free School Meal will then continue until the end
of the child’s current phase of education (e.g. primary or secondary).
What does it mean for One Education Grants and Benefits?
Local Authorities in England will not need to recheck any children elibible for a Free School Meal until the end of the Universal Credit Rollout (at the earliest).
Eligibility checks will only need to be performed for new claimants or those currently not eligible for a Free School Meal.
